On high-performance and racing cars, AN fittings and hoses are commonly used. Fuel, coolant, oil, and hydraulic fluids use AN hoses. The acronym AN refers to Army-Navy, as the design was based on a World War II standard for flexible fluid links. They're frequently used in aircraft, but they ultimately found their way into racing cars and then into streetcars with most high-performance aviation vehicles. AN uses 37-degree flared fitting to create a metal-to-metal seal. People prefer AN fittings over conventional push-on nipples and hose clamps since they look classy and provide a stable fitting that seals hoses better. They create a secure seal by forming an available link. Leak-free bulkhead pass-throughs, such as those found outside fuel cells, can also be made with AN fittings.
Slip-on or National Pipe Thread (NPT) fittings are used on most engine blocks and OEM fittings. Many adapters and fitting styles are available to connect AN hardware with heads, engine blocks, cylinder radiators, and oil coolers. AN fittings are available in various angles, including straight, 30, 45, 60, 90, 120, 150, and even 180 degrees, to support routing and clearance. Special sockets for pressure or temperature sensors are included in some fittings. Tee fittings may be used to connect several lines of coolant. Fluids may be passed through the firewall or fuel cells using bulkhead fittings. There are AN fittings with a washer and clamping nut to have a leak-free seal against the bulkhead wall on both sides.
Standard wrenches can damage AN fittings, which are usually made of aluminum. To avoid damage to the material of the fittings, special aluminum AN wrenches are made of anodized aluminum. An AN wrench, bench vise, masking tape, pinch clamp pliers, and a hose cutter are typical assembly tools. Aluminum vise jaws are often used to preserve the finish and are molded to carry the fittings. You might also require a nut driver if you are using worm gear hose clamps.
National Pipe Tapered threads, also known as ANSI/ASME B1.20.1 pipe threads, are a pipe thread type. It is a measuring standard for tapered threads on threaded pipes and fittings in the United States. Threaded pipes can provide a good seal for hydraulic fluid pipes. NPT threads, also known as MPT threads (male pipe threads), are not compatible with NPS (National Pipe Straight) threads. A taper thread, unlike straight bolt threads, can pull tighter, resulting in a tighter seal. To maintain a leak-free seal, use a sealant compound or PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) tape. External and internal pipe threads are included in the NPT threads sizing table. All NPT threads have a taper rate of 1/16???3/4 in. per foot (62.5 mm per m), determined by the diameter shift over distance. The outside diameter (OD) of a pipe or fitting must also be assessed; both the TPI and the OD are needed for correct thread size classification because the TPI can be different for different sizes.
NPT threads were created for water pipe plumbing (60 psi) rather than hydraulic systems. They have, however, been used in hydraulic systems for a long time. Pipe threads are not intended for high applications in general because they spill more than any other connection type. NPT threads, as previously stated, require a certain amount of sealant to be applied to the threads before assembly. NPT threads are more prone to leaking than Dryseal threads; however, if under tightened, any thread form will leak. While there isn't yet a universal tightening norm, keep in mind that tightening specifications vary depending on the re-use and form of sealant used. It's also worth noting that overtightening the female port will cause it to crack.
