The first emission controls, such as Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) and secondary air injection, began appearing. Since then, clean air standards have become more stringent, and the emission control system has become more complex. Blow-by is the term for combustion gases that seep beyond the piston rings and pressurize the crankcase, causing oil leaks if not permitted to leave. These gases can't be put into the air because they include dangerous hydrocarbons (HC), so the PCV system directs them to the air intake, where they mix with the air/fuel mixture and are burned. If your PCV valve has become clogged, we offer the correct replacement for your engine.
Smog is caused by the formation of nitrogen oxides (NOx) in combustion chambers with high temperatures. The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system transfers a regulated quantity of engine exhaust into the intake air stream to cool combustion and minimize NOx. It may seem strange to cool with hot exhaust, but the combustion temperature decreases since it is an inert gas (no oxygen) and will not burn. The EGR valve is the most important part of the system. However, switches, sensors, solenoids, and relays can all fail. We have the components for a successful repair regardless of which portion of the system fails.
Fuel vapors were set free from the fuel tank and carburetor until the early 1970s. This was identified as a major source of HC emissions, prompting the evaporative emission control system (EVAP). The fuel system is covered with EVAP. The gasoline vapors are collected and stored in a carbon canister before being routed to the engine and consumed in the combustion chambers.
