Steering dampers, also called steering stabilizers, act as shock absorbers for your steering mechanism, reducing side-to-side action and ensuring smooth, predictable driving.

Large, heavy automobiles, especially those with larger than standard wheels and tires, are more prone to steering shimmy. The feared "death wobble," in which the wheels oscillate wildly after striking a bump, forcing the driver to struggle with the steering wheel to control the vehicle. Catching a bump or a hole can create a "bump steer," in which the vehicle deviates from the intended path and steers in an unexpected direction. Preventing such events requires a well-working steering damper/stabilizer.
You should check the steering damper or stabilizer if any of the above indications are present. Examine the damper body for actual damage such as rust and dents caused by collisions and signs of fluid leaking, which would be an apparent reason for poor damper function. Look for cracks and looseness in the mounts and fractures, dry rot, and breakdown in the bushings, which might cause the noise.
Whether the damper is uninstalled, the shaft should have the same amount of resistance when stretched or compressed, and if the damper is worn, the effort needed will be less than it would be on a fresh damper.
